Faiz Ali Faiz is a member of the seventh consecutive generation
of a family of qawwals, the passionately fervorous Sufi choirs
of the Punjab. He was born in 1962 in Sharaqpur, between Lahore
and Faisalabad and began to sing professionally in 1978, accompanied
by his own ensemble.
His style is the energetic doaba of the Punjab, the Eastern
regions of Pakistan. He can sing an exceptionally wide range
of notes and his voice is especially rich in timbre, bringing
to mind Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whose compositions Faiz Ali
Faiz likes to perform.
Influenced by the sham-chaurasi Ustad Salamat Ali Khan's
famous school of khayal singing , Faiz Ali studied Hindu classical
music with Ustad Ghulam Shabbir Khan and Ustad Jafar Khan.
He received lessons in qawwali from Muhammad Ali Faridi and
Abdur Rahim Faridi Qawwal.
Faiz Ali Faiz's concerts are much more than a simple musical
performance they evoke the devotional atmosphere of Sufi religious
meetings.
Faiz Ali's uncle, Rehmat Ali Khan, is his regular accompanist
on the harmonium. Rehmat Ali Khan performed for many years
with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
